The British Medical Journal has published a study of 8234 children aged seven plus another 909 kids taking part in a wider study to establish what early factors showed a risk of obesity by the age of seven. The four main signs:-- Parental obesity
- High birthweight
- Over eight hours a week watching TV at age three
- Less than 10.5 hours sleep a night at the age of three
The researchers point out that the precise reasons are unclear: obese parent may simply pass on their genes or it may be more to do with family eating habits. Sleep may be a factor because of hormones secreted at night or because a child that sleeps more eats less.
