The Right Formula

New Babies have few defences against germs, so practising good hygiene during preparation and storage of formulas is essential to prevent infections. Tips from the Asian Food Information Centre in Singapore:-

1. Sterilise bottles and teats in a bottle steriliser or in a pot of boiling water for five minutes.

2. Wash your hands and utensils before preparing the formula. Don't use your fingers to cover the teat while shaking the bottle as this may contaminate the feed.

3. Use only boiled tap water to prepare the formula. Not all bottled waters are sterile. Be sure the mixed formula has cooled to room temperature before feeding.

4. Follow the instructions and measure ingredients carefully when preparing formula.

5. Refrigerated bottles thar aren't immediately used. Discard unused formula within 24 hours.

6. Bring refrigerated formula to room temperature before feeding by placing the bottle in a container of hot water for a few minutes.

7. Discard leftover formula after the baby has finish eating.
